Teaching of Reading at Platts Heath Primary School
Phonics is taught throughout the school using Read Write Inc. Phonics lessons are delivered daily to children in Foundation Stage and KS1, enabling children to decode effectively. This is continued into KS2 where necessary.
Reading is taught primarily using RWI in Foundation Stage and KS1 with opportunities for guided, shared, and independent reading every session. Children also have the opportunity to read 1:1 with an adult at least once a week. This continues into KS2 where children are given plenty of opportunities to develop their reading through guided, shared and independent reading activities throughout the week.
The school does not rely on one scheme but uses Oxford Reading Tree, Dandelion and Rigby Star among others. These are complimented with a wide range of books, including short chapter books until the children are ready to be a ‘free reader’.
Reading at home
All pupils are expected to read at home daily. Children have a reading record for adults to record all reading sessions and comment on successes and difficulties. Every year there is a ‘Reading Challenge’ to encourage and reward reading to an adult.
Children are regularly assessed to monitor progression in reading. Reading targets appropriate for the child’s year group can be found at the front of their English book. Assessment activities could include questioning in guided reading sessions, comprehension tasks, reading records and reading age tests.
