Teaching of Reading at Platts Heath Primary School
Phonics is taught throughout the school using letters and sounds. This takes place during a differentiated 15 minute taught session in Potter class daily and when required to any child who has not reached the required standard after the Phonics task in Year 1.
Reading is taught through 'Read Write Ink', guided, shared and individual reading
All children have a guided reading session, daily for 20 minutes
The school does not rely on one scheme but uses Oxford Reading Tree, Dandelion and Rigby Star. These are complimented with a wide range of books, including short chapter books until the children are ready to be a ‘free reader’.
Reading at home
All pupils are expected to read at home daily. Children have a reading record for adults to record all reading sessions and comment on successes and difficulties. Every year there is a ‘Reading Challenge’ to encourage and reward reading to an adult.
Reading is assessed through questioning in guided reading sessions, comprehension tasks, reading records and reading age tests.
